IPTN Forms Strategic Alliance with IHSTS

Updated: Nov 18, 2022

On World Diabetes Day, the Institute for Personalized Therapeutic Nutrition (IPTN) is excited to announce a strategic alliance with the Institute for Health System Transformation and Sustainability (IHSTS) that could help re-write the script for millions of Canadians living with Type 2 Diabetes and those that are risk of developing it. Our two organizations will work together to change clinical practices and health care policy so that remission of Type 2 Diabetes will become an option for all patients to consider.

Today, more than 11 million (1 in 3) Canadians are living with Pre-Diabetes or Diabetes and annual medical cost to Canada is expected to be more than 27 Billion in 2018 with numbers increasing dramatically over the next decade.

On World Diabetes Day, let’s change the conversation about the treatment and outcomes of type 2 diabetes.

“As one of its strategic goals, the IHSTS is committed to arresting the devastating trajectory and societal burden of chronic disease, with a focus on type 2 diabetes. We aim to accomplish this by forging relationships with organizations like IPTN who have developed innovative interventions with the potential to transform BC’s health care system as well as address the issue of sustainability” said Marc Pelletier, CEO for the IHSTS. “By working together, we are not just looking to change the conversation, but to dramatically improve the outcomes for Canadians suffering from Type 2 Diabetes while also reducing the cost to our health care system.”

“The IPTN has been changing the conversation about type 2 diabetes by mobilizing the health professional community around the concept of personalized Therapeutic Nutrition: using individually tailored nutritional interventions to reduce or reverse patient-specific metabolic dysfunctions, medical conditions or their associated symptoms”, said Sean McKelvey, CEO for the IPTN. “Through our alliance with the IHSTS, we look forward to rolling out training programs for health professionals sooner, moving new knowledge from research into practice faster, and removing barriers to making Therapeutic Nutrition accessible to patients through family doctors and other health professionals working in primary care.”

The IPTN is currently working with researchers at the University of British Columbia on a ground-breaking clinical study which is demonstrating that people with Type 2 Diabetes can reduce or eliminate the need for medications using Therapeutic Nutrition. Remission of Type 2 Diabetes using an individualized dietary intervention has recently been recognized globally as the preferred management strategy by leading physicians, dietitians, pharmacists and allied health professionals. This food first approach must become a public health priority if we want to improve health and quality of life outcomes for patients living with Type 2 Diabetes and control the escalating costs of diabetes-related health care.
